Balaclava State School is located in the western suburbs of Cairns. Most of the students live in the surrounding suburbs. The school enrolment was 290 primary (including Prep) students in February 2009. We are a co-educational school with a diverse student enrolment. Approximately 58% of students are Aborigines or Torres Strait Islanders and a further 9% of students are from the Cook Islands. There is a significant number of students for whom English is a second language, including but not exclusively, Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander and Cook Islanders. More than 10 languages are represented in the school. Some or our students require high-level support Our school currently has 2 Prep and 10 classes from years 1 through 7 with a significant Learning Support program.Special Education support operates for a range of children including those with visual, intellectual and autistic impairments. |
